Harnett County Death Index Office

The Harnett County Register of Deeds is the official custodian of death records. The office sits at 305 W. Cornelius Harnett Blvd., Suite 200, Lillington, NC 27546. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The current Register of Deeds is Matthew S. Willis.

Harnett County was formed from Cumberland County in 1855. Fires in 1892 and 1894 wiped out many early records. Death records start in 1913, when North Carolina began to require them by law. The office records, indexes, and stores all death certificates filed in Harnett County. Staff can look up names in the death index and pull files for you.
